The community that Owen and I previously visited ended up getting a warning from the DPW(Department of Public Works) that they have to leave their current location and move to somewhere else. Kurt and June told us that they will be going into the Navigation while the others will move to an another space. After parting with our final goodbyes with Kurt, June and their community, we picked a day to just explore around the city to find another community of Homeless. While exploring, Owen and I spotted a small group of tents underneath the bride of highway 101. We walked toward where the tent was and came across a man sitting outside without any tent. We briefly introduced ourselves and our project and he gladly accepted to be part of our project and that's when we met, Patrick.

After 2 days meeting with Kurt, Kurt introduced us to his neighbor, June who lives right next to Kurt's tent. June's tent was big compared to the others and she had two big dogs guarding her tent. June was very open to talking to us about herself and the small community she lives in. She didn't immediately have time to have a conversation with us because she had to go to navigation. Owen and I weren't sure what she meant by navigation and she briefly explained to us that Navigation is the shelter where all homeless visit before going into the actual Homeless shelter. We visited her again the other day, and we decided to go on the walk together with her dog and June slow began to tell us her story.
Owen and I visited the small community of the Homeless people on the street just two blocks away from school. Both of us were a little hesitant at first to approach any of the tent. There weren't many people out from their tents and were still sleeping in. Luckily, we saw a man outside of a red tent where he was building something out of scrap. We approached him and introduced ourselves to him and about our project. The man's name was Kurt and he was hesitant to offer us his hand because he thought his hand was too dirty to offer for a handshake. We gladly took our handshakes and had a brief conversation. The meeting was very short but for the past 2-3 weeks we have gone back to visit him and his community and to just have a casual talk.
In order have a understanding of the area, Owen and I took our time to walk around SoMa, South of Market Street in San Francisco. There were a lot of moments where one turn around a corner led to a whole different environment.
iOur collaborative project examines San Francisco's SOMA district, which suffers from a massive gape of wealth. This inequality causes division within the community.
Therefore, our project focuses on breaking down psychological boundaries between the less well-off and the more well-off. Through facilitating the telling of stories from the homeless community in SOMA, we help generate empathy for this community. Hopefully, this will lead wealthier people to help them. A story is not just about words, but about images. We combine words and images into series of digital sculptures. These sculptures are in the shape of polyhedrons so that people can interact with them. The individual faces of the polyhedron have visuals and quotes relating to their stories. In addition to the digital sculptures, we have a video that plays along in the background to give additional context. |
AuthorSince the age of 9, Grace grew up in the bay area but mostly in southern part of the bay area. When growing up, she often spent time alone at home with crayons and just a small sketchbook to keep herself accompany at home. Before her transfer to CCA, she found great passion for design and she realized that her true passion was in Interaction Design where. With her love for I, she hopes to design where people can come together to interact and create a diverse environment even after her graduation from CCA. |
